Tourists are cancelling their hotel reservations and holiday trips in popular tourist spots in Himachal Pradesh as heavy rain continues to lash the hill state. Over 50 people have died in rain-related incidents in the state as of Monday.

In view of heavy rainfall, the hotel occupancy in major tourist destinations like Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala has dropped below ten per cent.

"The hotel occupancy in Manali is just two percent. We are only getting foreign tourists who are returning from Leh. Domestic tourists are avoiding visiting hills," said Gajender Thakur, the President of Manali Hotels Association.

Meanwhile, members of a tourist group from Sri Lanka, stranded at Mandi, told India Today that the tour organisers did not inform them about the bad weather and damaged roads.

"Had we been alerted we may not have planned this trip. We had a very bad experience. The bad weather has spoiled our holiday," said A Falinga, a Colombo-based tourist.

Falinga further said that they wanted to see the snow at Rohtang Pass but they are now compelled to cancel the trip.

"Not only the holiday but we also wasted our time and money. We have no choice but to go back," he added.

Similarly, Shalini, Selene Jaisurya and others from Colombo who were on their first trip to Manali, are facing transport issues as the Manali highway had been blocked near Mandi.

Meanwhile, the local administration has advised tourists to avoid non-essential travel during the night, when falling boulders and landslides may not be visible.

Earlier in July, around 70,000 stranded tourists were rescued by the Himachal Pradesh government from Kullu Manali, Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur districts.
